PreBots is a three level program for students in Grades 2 and 3, ages 6 to 8.


​​​​Pre-Bots 1


Introduction to Simple Machines


Students will build and interact with Vex models, exploring how objects in the world around them have movement.  They will be predicting results, experimenting and exploring the basic mechanical principals of gears, levers, pulleys, and wheels & axles.  They will be actively involved in creative thinking, problem solving and teamwork skills.  This is a structured time for learning and requires students that are motivated to listen and learn on the computer while having the distraction of interacting with the Vex Robotic System.

This program will be offered for 2.5 hours/week for 4 weeks.

  • Recommended for students currently in grades 2 and 3.
  • No previous experience is required
  • Students will have a partner for some activities and are expected to co-operate and share well.
  • Maximum class size of 6.
  • Cost $135.00 + HST.


Pre-Bots 2

Compound Simple Machines


 Students will investigate compound simple machines that use their energy.  They will be estimating, predicting, and problem solving more advanced Vex models than in Pre-Bots 1, to investigate the relationships of more than one simple machine on a model and how they can effect the outcome its movement. This is a structured environment and requires students that are motivated to to listen and learn on the computer while having the distraction of interacting with the Vex Robotic System.

This program is offered for 2.5 hours/week for 4 weeks.

  • Recommended for students in grade 2 or 3.
  • They should have completed Pre-Bots 1.
  • Maximum class size of 6.
  • Cost $135.00 + HST. 


Pre-Bots 3

Introduction to Programming and Logical Thinking


Students will be using the Vex IQ platform from Innovation First.  They will begin the process of understanding a robot and its construction and design as they program a simple robot model that will solve simple tasks.  They will be actively involved in creative thinking, problem solving, and teamwork skills as well as developing skills in STEM, (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).  This is a structured environment and requires students that are motivated to to listen and learn on the computer while having the distraction of interacting with the Vex Robotic System.

This program is offered for 2.5 hours/week for 4 weeks.


  • Recommended for students currently in grade 3.
  • They should have completed Pre-Bots 2.
  • Students will have a partner for activities and are expected to co-operate and share well.
  • Maximum class size 6.
  • Cost $135.00 + HST.


 ProBots is a three level program designed for students in Grades 4 to 8.  Ages 8 to 13.


Pro-Bots 1

The Foundations of Programming Level 1


​In this introductory class, students will begin the adventure into the world of Vex Robotics.  In the class the student will learn what a robot is, how it works, and what sensors are available to make it come to life.  Sensors will be explained through analysis, experimentation and observation in an interactive environment.  With this new found knowledge, students will be asked to design and program robots to solve certain tasks.  In the solving of these tasks, students will be expected to maintain an engineering book, work in pairs and interact with the other groups.


This program is offered for 2.5 hours/week for 8 weeks.


  • Recommended for ages 9 to 15.
  • Students should have completed grade 3 in 2015.
  • No previous experience required.
  • Students will have a partner for most activities and are expected to co-operate and share well.
  • Maximum class size 10.
  • Cost $275.00 + HST.


Pro-Bots 2


The Foundations of Programming Level 2


This level will continue the exploration of Vex Robotics from level one.  The students, with their knowledge, will be given more freedom to program and design their robots to solve harder challenges.  With their understanding of sensors, more emphases on problem solving and team work will be explored through the use of more advanced programming. Level Two will complete the foundation of sensors and can lead into level three's even more enhanced programming.

  • Recommended for ages 9 - 15.
  • Students should have completed grade 3 in 2015.
  • Previous Foundations of Programming Level 1 is necessary.
  • Students will have a partner for most activities and are expected to co-operate and share well.
  • Maximum class size 10. 
  • Cost $275.00 + HST.


Pro-Bots 3


The Foundations of Programming Level 3


This level is for students that have completed levels 1 and 2 and are interested in extending their knowledge of programming constructs. They will be using more complex programming and tackling more challenging tasks with regards to robots' design and build. This level and its concepts are encouraged to have, to be considered for a place on the Pro-Bots VEX IQ team for 2016.


This program is offered for 2.5 hours/week for 8 weeks.

  • Recommended for ages 9 - 15.
  • Students should have completed grade 3 in 2014.
  • Previous Foundations of Programming Level 2 is necessary.
  • Students will have a partner for most activities and are expected to co-operate and share well.
  • Maximum class size is 10.
  • Cost $275.00 + HST.



Introduction to VEX EDR


The Introduction to Vex EDR program is designed to introduce the students to the VEX EDR platform.  This platform is a highly versatile construction system that allows students to build whatever they can imagine.  This is an accelerated program offered over weekends and Professional Development days.  The course is 30 hours long, costs $450.00 + HST and students are expected to participate in all the classes.  Once completed the students will have the necessary skills to build VEX EDR robots capable of competing in the VEX EDR robotics competitions.  ProBots Ottawa is pleased to help sponsor a VEX EDR team.







Introduction to the Arduino Circuit Board Part One


Part one will introduce you to components of digital circuits, the Arduino circuit board, the Arduino Integrated Development Environment, and simple circuits. Cost: $60.00 + HST





Introduction to the Arduino Circuit Board Part Two


Part two will continue on from part one.  You will build and program more complex circuits.  Example - timing, motor drivers, etc.
